Dean Chamberlain

Light painting photographer Dean Chamberlain has been capturing photographs since 1967. It was his passion for photography that led him to the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1977 to pursue a fine art degree. During Dean’s time at Rochester he discovered light painting photography. He has used the technique ever since in his various works. Dean has created stunning portraits of well known individuals such as David Bowie and Paul McCartney. He has also directed numerous music videos. Chamberlain’s work has appeared in publications such as Esquire, Vanity Fair and the Washington Post. He has received an MTV breakthrough award for directing music videos for Arcadia (Missing), Paul McCartney (This One) and Duran Duran (All She Wants Is).

Here are some of Dean Chambers' images i like how varied his work is although all the techniques are achieved using light painting there are so many different effects you can create. Some of his images almost look as though they've been shot underwater with the swirls of light used it look like the bottom of the ocean when the light reflects down through the water in particular the first image wilderness almost looks like a fish in the sea. in some of his images you need to take a minute to look at it and realise what your actually looking at on the other hand the subject matter is obvious with the bright bursting colours the image standing tulips is a good example of this it looks at though the flowers have been painted. I also like the way he lights a set/room with different coloured lights to make it look surreal and unreal. He also has a set of images where he has just lit the single object the kiosk below is an example of this this is the technique i used in my light painting taking an image in the dark and just lighting the subject leaving the rest of the image black and almost bringing a usually dull and boring image back to life with light and making it interesting and alive again.

Wilderness
Tree Roots Steps
Standing Tuips
Raymond Pettibon
Paul McCartney
Oscar Janiger
Kiosk
Nina Graboi
Blue Nudes

Here is a video by Dean Chambers all shot using light painting throughout the different techniques used are very affective, again like some of his images almost looks as though its been shot underwater. Another technique used is when the woman opens the book it appears there is writing inside all done with light this is achieved by moving the light very fast to achieve a light trail which then looks like writing.
